"Our job was to crush the stones into gravel. We were divided into four rows, about a yard-and-a-half apart, and
sat cross-legged on the ground." (Mandela)

| People protesting the apartheid |
As more people got committed to joining the African National Congress (ANC) to stop the apartheid.
More women joined in the protests. One of these women was Winnie Mandela, who joined the Orlando West branch of the
ANC's Women's League. When Nelson Mandela found out that she was protesting the apartheid, he was proud that she was
so devoted, yet he was concerned for what might happen to her. "I told her I welcomed her decision, but that
I had to warn her about the seriousness of her action." (Mandela)
