People protesting the apartheid

As more people got committed to joining the African National Congress (ANC) to stop the apartheid.  More women joined in the protests.  One of these women was Winnie Mandela, who joined the Orlando West branch of the ANC's Women's League.  When Nelson Mandela found out that she was protesting the apartheid, he was proud that she was so devoted, yet he was concerned for what might happen to her.  "I told her I welcomed her decision, but that I had to warn her about the seriousness of her action." (Mandela)

March 21, 1960. 69 Africans are shot and killed.

During a protest in Sharpeville, police forces seized fire without warning on the pedestrians, killing 69 people.  Mandela used this tragedy to gather everyone together and defeat the South African government.
